Trying to recover from 9/11, many airlines have found ways to cut the costs of airline tickets. Now they’ve found new ways of charging you money. One of the biggest fees that have made airlines billions of dollars is charging to check in a bag.

Many airlines charge $25 for the first two bags you check and $35 for additional bags. This used to be complementary, but now not many airlines include it in the ticket price. Southwest is one of the few that do. Learning how to fly light will help you to save money. Here are some tips to help you travel light:

  • Check the dimensions of carryon bags. The first thing you’ll want to do is check the airline’s flight to see what the size requirements are for carryons. Once you know the dimensions, find the bag that fits closest to this so you have as much room as possible.
  • Slim down your packing list. Once you’ve picked your bag, the challenge is to fit everything that you need in that bag. Only take what is absolutely essential. If you’re not sure you’ll need it, then don’t pack it.
  • Check the weather report. Before you pack, go to Weather.com and see what the weather will be in the location where you’re traveling to. Check not only day temperatures, but night temperatures as well. This will help you create the proper packing list.
  • Plan to do laundry. If there are laundry facilities at your location, plan to wash some clothes so you can save room in packing.
